A stage configuration is the arrangement of the audience around the performance space: in front of it, on three sides of it, all the way around it, or inside it. It is the single biggest fact about any production's design, because it decides what the audience can see before a designer has decided anything at all. A set that works beautifully behind a proscenium arch can be unwatchable in the round, not because the design got worse but because the question changed.
Six configurations cover almost everything, and drama courses teach the same six: end-on or proscenium arch, thrust, in-the-round, traverse, promenade and immersive. This article takes each in turn, and then gets to the practical point: what each one demands of the set, the furniture, the entrances and the floor.
The configuration comes before the design
Most design conversations start with the world of the play. The configuration conversation has to come earlier, because it sets the physics everything else obeys. Where the audience sits decides which directions scenery can be tall in, whether there is a back wall to design against, how furniture must be placed and how low it must be, where actors can enter from, and whether a set change can happen out of sight or must become part of the show.
Designers rarely choose the configuration freely. Usually the venue has already chosen it, or the director has, and the design work is responding well to a given. That makes knowing the demands of each configuration more useful than having a favorite: the skill is reading the room you have actually been given.
The six stage configurations
Proscenium arch, or end-on
The audience sits on one side, facing the stage, usually looking through a framing arch. End-on staging is the same relationship without the architecture: one block of audience, one front. This is the configuration most theatre buildings are, and the one every other configuration is defined against.
It is the most forgiving to design for. There is a back wall to build scenery against, height is free because nobody sits behind the set, the wings are invisible so masking and storage are cheap, and flying scenery in and out is possible because the audience cannot see up into the flys. Sightlines are the simplest of any configuration, though not trivial: the extreme side seats and the front row still lose parts of the picture, which is what sightline checks on the plan are for. The price of all this freedom is distance and flatness: the audience sees one face of everything, and the design carries the whole burden of depth.
Thrust
The stage projects forward into the audience, who sit around three sides of it. The fourth side, upstage, keeps a scenic face.
Thrust trades the proscenium's freedom for closeness. Scenery of any height retreats to the upstage end, because anything tall further downstage blocks somebody's view of somebody else's stage. Furniture drops low and moves toward the edges or the diagonals. Entrances multiply: as well as the upstage ways in, thrust stages often use vomitoria, the tunnels that pass through the audience seating, so actors can arrive from the world rather than only from behind the set. The designer starts thinking in three fronts rather than one, and the floor starts mattering, because a large fraction of the audience is now looking down at it.
In the round
Theatre in the round surrounds the stage entirely: the audience sits on all sides, and the performance happens in the middle of them.
In the round is the honest extreme. There is no back wall, no wings, no masking and nowhere to hide, so the traditional idea of scenery mostly disappears. Nothing on stage can be much above sitting height or it blocks the view across; furniture is low, open and placed on diagonals so that no seat spends the evening looking at the back of a sofa. The floor becomes the largest design surface in the show and often carries most of the design. Entrances happen through the audience, down the aisles or through vomitoria, and every set change happens in full view, which means changes must be designed as movement worth watching rather than concealed as machinery. What the configuration gives back is intimacy no proscenium can match, and an audience that can see itself watching, which changes how a play feels more than any scenery could.
Traverse
The audience sits in two facing banks with the stage running between them, like a road or a catwalk.
Traverse is in-the-round's demands stretched long and thin. Height is only available at the two short ends, which become the natural homes for any scenic statement. The playing space is a corridor, so blocking and design both organize along its length, and furniture sits low and against the long edges for the same reason as in the round: everything on stage is between one half of the audience and the other. Each bank of seats watches the play against a backdrop of the other bank's faces, which productions either fight or use.
Promenade
The audience moves. There is no fixed seating; the production leads people from place to place, often guided by the performers, and each scene has its own location within a larger space.
For a designer, promenade stops being about one picture and becomes about a route. The design questions are a journey's questions: how the audience knows where to go, what each station needs to establish its scene quickly to people standing at odd angles, how long a crowd takes to move and what covers the moving. Sightlines are anarchic, since nobody controls where each spectator stands, so promenade design leans on things that read from everywhere: light, sound, height above head level, and objects strong enough to survive being seen from behind.
Immersive
Immersive staging surrounds the audience with the world of the production and usually lets them move through it or interact with it. It overlaps with promenade but goes further: the audience is inside the set rather than in front of any stage at all.
The design demand flips completely. Every surface may be inspected at touching distance, so detail that a proscenium hides at ten meters has to survive at ten centimeters. Rooms must work as real rooms, sturdy enough to be leaned on and complete in the round, because there is no angle from which they are not seen. Immersive design is closer to building an environment than dressing a stage, which is why it is the most expensive configuration per square meter and the reason immersive productions design the audience's freedom as carefully as the scenery.

One row of this table is worth pinning up: whichever configuration you are in, the audience's position is the design's first constraint, and every demand in the right-hand column is a sightline fact wearing different clothes.
Sightlines are the common thread
Every configuration's rules reduce to the same question: from this seat, what can this person see, and what is in the way? A proscenium asks it about the extreme sides, thrust asks it about three directions at once, the round asks it about every direction, and promenade gives up controlling it and designs for robustness instead.
Which is why the checking habit matters more than any configuration-specific rule. On paper, sightlines are drawn on the groundplan from the worst seats through the edges of the set. In three dimensions, a white card model answers the same question by putting your eye where the audience's will be. Design software makes the same check continuous: Setplot derives a 3D model from the groundplan, so you can choose a position along a seating bank and inspect the view in any of the five supported forms. Seating starts as an estimate unless you enter venue measurements. The model is a design check with simplified geometry, not a guarantee of the view from every ticketed seat.
Designing for the room you actually have
A last word about the room most school and community productions actually get: a hall, a studio or a black box. A black box is not a seventh configuration; it is a room with no fixed configuration at all, which means someone gets to choose, and the choice is the production's first and largest design decision. Seating on one end is a small proscenium without the arch. Two facing banks make a traverse. Chairs on all four sides make a round. The same play in the same room becomes four different designs, and rehearsing in one configuration while planning another is a well-worn way to discover the difference too late.
So decide early, draw the audience on the plan the day you decide, and let every choice after that answer to where they sit.
